Interview Tips

It is essential to take interviews very seriously; you only get one chance to make that first impression! It's a combination of the following factors that will get you that job. Consider this, the average increase in basic salary from leaving one job and going to the next is 10%. Ask yourself this question; is a 10% increase in your salary something that would be of benefit? If it is then follow these simple steps.

Be prepared!

  • Research the company as much as possible, find out who their main competitors are and if possible try to speak to other people who have worked for them.
  • Know the names of your interviewers and remember them.
  • Get the directions you need well in advance and find out about your nearest train station/bus stop/parking place.
  • Prepare your journey carefully, do a dummy run if possible.
  • Prepare a number of answers to questions you think the interviewer may ask you.
  • Prepare eight or nine questions based on the research you have done into the company.

On the interview day

  • Read through your CV several times to familiarise yourself with it.
  • Never be late for an interview, it shows a lack of respect and bad planning on your part.
  • Dress smartly, a plain white shirt or blouse combined with a dark business suit gives the best impression.
  • From the minute you enter the building of the employer be friendly, polite and courteous, you'd be surprised how many receptionists are asked what impression they got of a candidate by the directors of a company.
  • Meet your interviewer with a smile and a firm handshake and maintain eye contact
  • Speak slowly and clearly and be polite, do not swear in the interview under any circumstances.
  • At the end of the interview ask at least two good questions from the list you have prepared. For a list of good questions, contact an Edgar Cowen consultant
  • Thank the interviewer(s) for their time at the end
